• Mabank bows out  -  WHITEHOUSE — The District 13-AAA champion and 10th-ranked Mabank Lady Panthers saw their volleyball season end Tuesday night with a four-game loss to No. 2 White Oak .

• Cubettes one win away from state  -  SPRING, Texas — The Brenham Cubettes are back in the regional championship match for the third time in four years after sweeping Santa Fe in a Class 4A Region III semifinal match here Tuesday night.

• Cubs close regular season vs. run-heavy Panthers  -  On paper, the Brenham Cubs’ Thursday night showdown with the Caney Creek Panthers to conclude the regular season appears meaningless.

• Area grid coaches happy with recent wins   -  What a difference a week makes.

  Harper High School scored in every way possible as the host Longhorns blew out District 28-1A varsity football rival Johnson City 33-0 Friday to capture at least a tie for another league championship.

  Harper High School’s varsity volleyball team finished off their season last night after losing in four games 25-16, 22-25, 22-25, 13-25, to D’Hanis during the Regional Quarterfinal match in Kerrville.

• Lady Bulldogs Capture Area Crown   -  The Wortham Lady Bulldogs volleyball team traveled to Burleson last Thursday night to compete with the Collinsville Lady Pirates in the Area round of the state playoffs.

• Teague falls to #1 Mart 37-29  TEAGUE, TX – The top ranked Mart Panthers scored 23 unanswered points en route to a 37-29 win over the number six ranked Teague Lions Friday night at Lion Field.

• Fightin’ Cats do it up big;  For those who were writing off Mexia’s Fightin’ Black Cats, quit it!!!

• Whaley-Led Mustangs Outlast Groesbeck 41-22   -  Chris Whaley proved to be all that he was touted to be as he rushed for 227 yards on 12 carries. He scored four first half touchdowns to lead Madisonville over the Groesbeck Goats 41-22 at Groesbeck Friday night.

  All season long Plano West junior Jenny Swan has been one of the Wolves top runners.

  Representatives from Plano West will be in Austin today to take part in an appeals hearing on behalf of student athletes from the West and A&M Consolidated tennis teams.

• Lady Elks open season with win  -  ELKHART — The Elkhart Lady Elks opened the season with a 37-24 win over Grapeland Tuesday night.  Elkhart trailed by two points at halftime but outscored the Sandiettes 24-9 in the second half.

  Playing for pride, that’s the theme that Paris High took into this week’s preparation for its final game of the season.

  TERRELL — Freshman guard Shanice Hill scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Paris Lady Cats to a 48-36 victory over Terrell in the season opener Tuesday night.

• CROSS COUNTRY NOTES   -  Southlake Carroll coach Robert Ondrasek employs senior-driven workouts during the summer as part of the Dragons’ rigorous year-round work schedule. The hard work is paying off.

• GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Sophomore Briana Walker fell short of a triple-double in Fort Worth Wyatt’s 69-29 triumph over South Oak Cliff on Tuesday in a season-opening nondistrict game. Walker had 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine of her team’s 23 steals.
