• Heartbreak in the Valley - Alice coach Brent Davis described it best. The Coyotes’ 18-17 bi-district playoff loss was heartbreaking. Despite leading for most of the game, Alice lost the lead late and never recovered. 

• Dragons hold off Diboll  -  The Diboll Lumberjacks outscored Nacogdoches 28-13 in the fourth quarter, including a 9-0 run to close the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Dragons defeated the Lumberjacks 71-60 in basketball action Tuesday night at Dragon Coliseum.Pat Hall led Nacogdoches (2-1) with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

• Two of 3A’s best to go head to head  -  Roosevelt’s Vincent McNeil Jr. and Royse City’s Richard Morrison have never met. Still, there’s a level of respect between the two quarterbacks as strong as one that would involve life-long competitors. On Friday night (7:30 p.m.), in a 3A Division I Region II area-round matchup, they will line up as opponents.

  FREEPORT — Brazosport broke open a tight game in the third period to pull out a 79-61 victory over Calhoun on Tuesday night at E.E. “Flash” Walker Gymnasium.

  SWEENY — The Sweeny Bulldogs dashed into the win column for the first time this year by racing past visiting El Campo 83-46 Tuesday night in a non-district basketball clash.

  HITCHCOCK — The Bulldogs’ outstanding offense meets Salado’s stingy defense Saturday in the Class 2A, Division I regional semifinals.

• Allison back on familiar ground  BETHEL — When Cayuga head coach Tommy Allison steps onto the field of Wildcat Stadium Friday night, he will be on familiar territory.  For four years, Allison developed one of the best offenses in East Texas as the offensive coordinator at Palestine High School. • Grapeland looking for a playoff win  GRAPELAND — When the Grapeland Sandies were in must-win situations their final two games of district, head coach Curt Faigle made specific goals for his team that had nothing to do with the playoffs.

• Dillon’s kicking lifts Panthers  – Since he was three years old, Tyler Dillon has been playing soccer.  It was this hobby that caught the attention of Westwood assistant coach William Raphelt, thus catapulting the freshman into the role of Westwood’s kicker earlier in the season.

• Oakwood going to six-man football  -  OAKWOOD — After years of being one of the smallest 11-man football teams, Oakwood has decided to play six-man football starting next year.

• Basketball: Point taken  -  Considering the lack of varsity experience on the Denton boys roster, each nondistrict game presents a new chance for head coach Harold Jackson to give his players some valuable court time. So the Broncos seized the opportunity to spread out the minutes as they coasted past Pilot Point, 66-24, on Tuesday.

• Plano East wins “ugly game”
  For basketball players that question the merits of spending so much time working on free throw shooting, Tuesday night was a perfect example of why coaches stress it.

• Inexperience, free throw woes cost Wildcats
  After Plano Senior lost to Flower Mound Marcus, 55-38, on Tuesday night, Plano head coach Tom Inman was upset, yet reserved.

• Second-half outburst lifts Hawks past Mustangs
  IRVING  Hebron scored four touchdowns in a 15-minute second half stretch to off Grapevine, 38-28, in a Class 5A Division II Region I bi-district playoff game at Texas Stadium.

• Stars align in third quarter for win
  Carrollton American Heritage used a big third quarter to defeat Trinity Christian Cedar Hill 50-28, Friday at Prestonwood Christian High School.

• Stopping DeSoto’s Gray is key for Hawks
  If Hebron wants to advance to past the area round of the Class 5A football playoffs, the Hawks will have to find a way to slow DeSoto senior quarterback Cyrus Gray.

• Lady Trojans win consolation title at Creekview Tournament
  Newman Smith’s girls basketball team had a successful showing over the weekend at the Creekview Tournament as they rebounded from an opening round loss to win the consolation championship.

• Lady Mustangs claim first basketball victory
  Carrollton Creekview got its first win of the season in the opening game of the Lady Mustang classic Thursday, and finished the tournament they hosted 1-2.

  The Lady Lions basketball team won its third game of the year, beating Shelton, 63-27, Monday night. (RL Turner)

  Trailing by six to start the fourth quarter, the Brownwood Lions scored 13 unanswered points to seize control of their 54-48 victory over the Clyde Bulldogs in Monday’s home opener at Warren Gym.

  The Brownwood Lady Lions’ two-game win streak was snapped by the same team which handed them their first loss — but this time the final score was much closer.

• Elks drop season opener to Jackets  CLEBURNE — Cleburne jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as the Yellow Jackets won their season opener 53-42 at home over the Burleson Elks on Thursday.

  Cleburne faced a 12-5 deficit at the end of the first quarter and couldn’t come back against a physical Burleson team.
